Get the Deep Clean Your Teeth Need with Scaling & Root Planings
Are you suffering from symptoms such as swollen, red, inflamed, or bleeding gums? Has it been a significant period since your last proper teeth cleaning, with minimal tooth care in between? If any of this seems familiar to you, you might be suffering from periodontal disease, otherwise known as periodontitis. And while this oral disease can lead to more severe symptoms if left unchecked, there’s a way to restore the health of your teeth. With scaling and root planings, Cottage Dental Care can give your teeth the deep clean they need.
What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a severe inflammatory disease that targets the gums, bones and oral tissue in your oral cavities. This disease is the result of severe plaque and calculus build-up on an individual’s teeth. The plaque will, over time, harden into tartar, inviting bacteria to take root. And this bacteria is what begins to affect a person’s oral cavities, thus causing symptoms such as:
- Red & Swollen Gums
- Gum Inflammation
- Pus Between Teeth & Gums
- Loose Teeth
- Bad Breath
- Sudden Misalignment of Teeth
And if periodontal disease is left unchecked for too long, bacteria can exasperate other potential diseases or health problems, including strokes, diabetes, heart disease, pregnancy complications, dementia and more.
As advocates for your overall wellness, we also offer, saliva tests through OralDNA Labs. The first identifies which bacteria are triggering Periodontal Disease. The second is a DNA test that show if a patient is at great rick for Periodontal Disease. The third is a screening to identify the type(s) of oral HPV that could lead to oral cancer.
What is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing are two parts of the same dental procedure. The end goal is to deep clean your teeth and gums to remove all plaque, hardened tartar and bacteria. However, such a procedure is more involved than your routine cleaning, as your dentist must get under your gums. Thus, our patients are put under local anesthesia. You will remain awake during the procedure, but your gums will be numbed for the process.
- Scaling – Either done manually or with an ultrasonic instrument, plaque and tartar are loosened and removed from between your gums, beneath your gums and at the base of the crowns of your teeth.
- Root Planing – Tartar and plaque continue to be removed while cementum (calcified film) is cleaned directly off the roots of the teeth. Any rough surfaces on your teeth are smoothed out.
After scaling and root planing are complete, your dentist will wash out the problematic areas of your mouth, getting rid of any bacteria remaining. Finally, they will apply pressure to your teeth, ensuring gum tissue can adequately recover and grow.
